The short answer
Answer engine optimization is important because a growing share of questions now get answered by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, which return one composed answer and cite only a few sources. If your brand is not among those cited sources, you are invisible at the moment someone is deciding, even if you rank well in classic search.
The decision moment moved
When a question is answered in one composed response, the reader often never scrolls a link list. They read the answer and the few sources it names. If you are not one of those sources, you are not in the room while the prospect forms an opinion or builds a shortlist. Strong classic rankings do not save you here, because the reader may never reach the ranked results at all.
Citations are winner-take-few
A link list gives many pages a chance. An AI answer cites only a handful. That concentration cuts both ways: it is harder to get in, but once you are a trusted, cited source for a question, you tend to keep appearing. The upside of earning those citations early is durable.
You cannot fix what you cannot see
The practical reason AEO is important is measurement. Running your category’s prompts and reading citation rate, share of model, and sentiment per engine turns a vague worry into numbers you can act on, including where competitors are being cited and you are not.
